East Head Café, Knysna
By Jamie Who | Published: January 6, 2011

The East Head Cafe could be the best kept food secret in Knysna. Across a parking lot from the more celebrated Cornuti, it beats its more fancied neighbour in style, food and service. It might not be on the water (like Cornuti), but it’s pretty damn close.

It boasts an awesome outdoor area and panoramic view of the Knsyna lagoon and the entrance to the Heads.  There is a dedicated area for the kids to play (a nice touch I thought?) and the decor throughout is Afro-cool. Management-style is enthusiastic, hands-on and the service every time I visited was friendly and very, very good to boot.

The breakfast menu – and indeed the menu throughout – is made up of casual, simple food with one or two quirky touches that keep things interesting. I tried a vegetarian omelette consisting of butternut and jalapeno peppers, which was delicious. The real star came on a return visit though. The fish and chips.
Quite frankly, the best I have had anywhere in The Garden Route. Brilliant crisp batter and flaky, moist, fresh hake. Superb.

If you’re not in the mood for eating (shame), I’d advise making a trip solely for a Mojito. Served in a glass jug, it comes with massive bunches of fresh mint and a wooden “baton” so you can muddle your own drink. (This is a fancy way of saying squash your own limes basically – I picked it up from my cocktail guru mate Power). The Bloody Mary is also impressive.

Quaint, laid-back, great food and solid service. Pretty much exactly what I’m after in a holiday town restaurant.

Cheers,

Jamie Who

East Head Café
A fresh and uplifting café perched on the headlands with sea views. Essentially a beach house in white wood and splashes of colour, the big windows slide wide open on clear days and there's an outdoor area under milkwoods. Upbeat service to take you through the daily specials on the board, or choose all-day breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers, platters to share or more substantial dishes like prego roll, fish and chips or a casserole. The wine list is personal and diverse (though few by glass) and the food is reliable, simple and satisfying.
A great place for a tourist stop but also to while a few hours away, and gets very busy in season. Note no dinners served.

East Head Cafe - Fish and chips. Order it.
Published: Monday, January 4, 2010

Hi everyone. I gather quite a few of you started work today. Me? Not quite yet. I think I'll knock around Knysna and Plett for a bit longer thank you very much. I'm lucky enough to have a place in both of these awesome towns and love them both. The Knysna abode is on the Heads and is literally just above Cornuti, where I have spent several long and difficult hours hard at work for you trying to find out what the best wine and food on offer is. (I'll let you know in due time of course). The other day I thought I'd give the less fancied restaurant on the Eastern Head (creatively dubbed The East Head Cafe) a go for lunch. Let's have a look.

A few years ago this place was...how do I say this nicely....well, quite shitty. I'm glad to say it has been taken over and been given a nice facelift. Touches of funky African prints and cushions offset an otherwise pale colour scheme and the outside area has been redone with wooden tables and a bedouin tent to properly make use of a really spectacular setting. It's casual, "slip-slop" stuff, typified by the fact that I could take Elvis along.

To eat I went with a jalepeno burger which showed very little sign of heat. The patty was decent enough, well cooked and definitely home made. The star was The Queen's fish and chips though. Let me just say, The Queen has been hard at work too. Unselfishly eating fish and chips throughout the holiday until she could find a winner, she announced it here. The batter crunched with every cut and prod, the flesh was moist but not oily and the chips were perfect. A couple of beers washed it down and we left happy. Look, it could've gone very differently as a result of Elvis lifting his leg on a guest's bag. Yeah, not great. Luckily the dude was obsessed with bulldogs and was totally cool about it.

Anyway, if you're looking for something cheap and cheerful and you're in Knysna check this place out. It's a good alternative to the hectic queue you'll get at Cornuti. Give them a call on 0443840933.

Cheers,
Jamie Who

East Head Café, Knysna
By JPR | Published: September 7, 2009

A pretty new spot, run by Jerome, who used to operate Cruise Café – this “beach house” has a fabulous position overlooking the Heads and the interior is bright and cheerful, with big windows to capitalise on one of the world’s finest locations. In white wood and stabs of colour, it’s comfortable and unpretentious, as is the friendly service and casual menu with all-day breakfasts, sandwiches and lunches like gourmet burgers, fish and chips or daily specials. I tried the battered hake and chips and it was a fine result for R54, though the espresso was ordinary. A really great spot to while away a morning or afternoon
with friends (I preferred it to the Cornutti across the way), assisted by a quirky and personal wine list as well as liquid breakfasts…
